Full member (MCIC)

For admission as a full member (MCIC), a candidate must fulfill one of the following requirements.

Hold a Bachelor’s or higher degree in chemistry or an equivalent degree or diploma, in a program accredited by the Society or qualifications approved by the credentials committee.

Hold a degree from a chemistry program at a foreign university or from a non-accredited Canadian chemistry program where the Credentials Committee has judged the program to be equivalent to those accredited by the Society. Candidates in programs judged to be not equivalent will be accepted with at least three years of experience in the profession of chemistry.

Hold a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, applied science or a branch of science other than chemistry of an equivalent degree or diploma from an accredited program or one approved by the Credentials Committee and have at least three years of experience in the profession of chemistry after graduation.

Be a member of an association, order or corporation of chemists established under the laws of Canada, or a Province or Territory, and have at least three years of experience in the profession of chemistry.

Be a graduate student in chemistry or a postdoctoral fellow in chemistry who qualifications have been accepted by the Credentials Committee.

A candidate who does not hold any of the qualifications listed above but who is a recognized authority on chemistry and has attained a high degree of eminence.

Postdoctoral Membership

Members who are postdoctoral students are eligible for postdoctoral membership which is available for up to three years from their year of graduation.

Graduate Student Membership

Students who are currently enrolled in a full-time master's or doctoral program are eligible for a graduate student membership.

Undergraduate Student Membership

Students who are currently enrolled in a full-time bachelor's or diploma program are eligible for an undergraduate student membership.

Retired Membership

Members who have retired from active full-time employment and for whom the sum of their age plus years of membership equals a minimum of 85 are eligible for retired membership.

High School Teachers

High school teachers actively involved in teaching chemistry to high school students are eligible for high school teachers membership.

Spousal Membership

In addition to fulfilling at least one of the full member requirements, when someone from a married couple is a full CSC member his/her partner is eligible for spousal membership.

First Year After Graduation Membership

For the first year only after graduating from any undergraduate or graduate degree or technology program, members are eligible for a first year after graduation membership. You will have to note your graduation date and degree or diploma obtained.

Fifty Year Membership

Members having fifty years of consecutive membership are given a complimentary membership to recognize their commitment to the Institute. CIC/CSC conference registration is also provided complimentary.

Unemployed Member

Full members, who have maintained consistent membership for three years, and who provide evidence of unemployment at the time of renewal are eligible for unemployed membership which is available for up to two years.

Parental Leave Membership

A member who has maintained consecutive membership for 3 years is eligible for parental leave membership

Lifetime Membership

Never have to renew your membership again. Must be 50+ years old to qualify.

Adherence to the following principles is a requirement of membership. They were approved by the CIC Board of Directors on March 9, 1996.

As professional chemists, chemical engineers or chemical technologists, the members of the Chemical Institute of Canada and its Constituent Societies undertake:

• to dedicate themselves to the highest standards of personal honour and professional integrity;
• to extend fairness and loyalty to associates, employers, subordinates and employees;
• to accept and defend the primacy of public well-being.

In observance of these commitments, they shall:

• practice their professions with honour, honesty, integrity, and dedication to the truth;
• encourage and assist others in observing high professional standards;
• act responsibly, fairly, and in good faith in discharging obligations to the public, their peers, employers, and employees;
• sign and seal only documents that have been prepared by them or under their direct supervision;
• accept remuneration and credit only for work performed and professional services rendered;
• undertake only such work as they are competent to perform, and express opinions only on the bases of adequate knowledge and honest convictions;
• decline to undertake any work that is fraudulent, illegal or unethical;
• place the health, safety and welfare of all persons, and the reputation of their profession, above any consideration of self- interest, and resolve any conflicts in favour of the public good;
• recognize and declare promptly any conflicts of interest arising from their professional activities; and
• seek to promote the understanding of the social and environmental consequences, as well as of the benefits to the public, of the applications of chemistry, chemical engineering and chemical technology.

Member of the Chemical Institute of Canada (MCIC)

Any member of CIC or a Constituent Society, CSC, CSChE or CSCT, upon paying appropriate fees, will be given the designation of MCIC.

Associate Member (ACIC)

Anyone associated with the practice of, or with an interest in chemistry, who does not qualify as a full member, but who wishes to support the objectives of the society may apply as an associate member.

Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada (FCIC)

CIC Fellowship is a senior class of membership that recognizes the merits of CIC members who have made outstanding contributions. Nominate someone for FCIC designation.
