Louis Barriault, MCIC

Louis Barriault was born in Armagh, Qué. in 1970. He received his BSc in chemistry in 1993 at the Université de Sherbrooke. He pursed in PhD studies under the supervision of Pierre Deslongchamps at the same institution where he worked on transannular Diels-Alder reaction. In 1997, he joined the group of Leo A. Paquette at the Ohio State University as a postdoctoral fellow where he completed the total synthesis of (-)-polycarvernoside A. In May 1999, he accepted a position as assistant professor at the University of Ottawa where he has been promoted to full professor in 2010. His research involves the development of novel synthetic strategies using domino reactions, gold catalysis and total synthesis natural products. Barriault received the prestigious John Polanyi Award in Chemistry and the Premier’s Research Excellence Award from the Ontario government, Boehringer Ingelheim Young Investigator Award, University of Ottawa Young Researcher of the Year. Recently, Barriault was appointed University Research Chair in Synthetic Organic Chemistry. On the personal side, he is married to Julie Lamothe and they have three children. Barriault is a certified PADI divemaster and enjoys scuba diving in the St. Lawrence River and around the world.

This award is presented to a scientist who has made a distinguished contribution to medicinally relevant organic or biophysical chemistry while working in Canada. Eligible candidates must have held their first professional appointment as an independent researcher for twelve years or less at the time of initial nomination.

Deadline: July 2 of every year

Award: A framed scroll.

The recipient will be required to present an award lecture at the Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition.

Membership in the Institute is not a prerequisite for this award.

All nominations will remain in force for three years. Nominators are responsible for keeping the record of the nominee up to date and complete.

• Past Chair of the Biological-Medicinal Chemistry Division
• Past Chair of the Organic Chemistry Division
• Past two winners of the Boehringer Ingelheim (Canada) Research Excellence Award

The award shall be presented annually unless the Committee considers that no suitable candidate has been nominated.
