National Chemistry Week

What is National Chemistry Week (NCW)?

NCW is a once-a-year, one-week-long celebration of the chemical sciences in all provinces and territories in Canada.

NCW is a great opportunity for youth to get connected with the wonders of chemistry and for the not-so-young to appreciate the positive aspects of chemistry through hands-on experiments, games, demonstrations, lectures, exhibitions and more.

When Does it Take Place?

NCW kicks off on the Saturday following Thanksgiving and continues for eight days, ending on Saturday. In 2010, it will be held October 16–23.

How Can You Be Involved in Planning Activities

Who Plans Activities?

  • The CIC, through a network of dedicated volunteer members, coordinates activities for a wide public.
  • Anyone who is interested in chemistry can plan an event. It's not the size of the event that is important, it's sharing an interest in chemistry with someone else.
  • Volunteers partner with educational institutions from kindergarten to graduate studies, as well as companies, museums, science centres and government agencies.

What are Some Types of Activities?

Some types of activities to celebrate NCW could include:

  • School Visits
  • Public Displays and Demonstrations
  • Lectures
  • Open Houses
  • Tours of Facilities
  • Competitions, quizzes
  • Chemistry Trivia Periods
  • Chemistry Walks
  • Environmental Clean-ups
